HARRISBURG- Billy Wayne Black, 57, passed away at his home on June 11, 2026.
Born on February 28, 1969, in Charlotte, North Carolina, Billy was the son of William Edward Black. He was preceded in death by his father, as well as the two remarkable women who helped raise him and shape his life: Madeline Livingston, lovingly known as "Aunt Dean," and Bessie Ward, affectionately known as "Aunt Bessie."
Billy graduated from West Charlotte High School in 1987. After graduation, he spent 38 years working as a barber. Over the decades, he became a familiar face to generations of clients, many of whom became friends. His barber chair was often filled not only with customers, but with laughter, stories, and conversation.
Billy loved the Lord with his whole heart and was a man of deep faith. He believed in the power of prayer and never hesitated to pray for those he loved or those in need. His faith was a guiding force throughout his life and brought him comfort, strength, and hope.
Music was woven throughout Billy's life. He played the piano beautifully, loved singing old gospel songs, and rarely missed an opportunity to share a favorite song. He was especially fond of gospel legend Vestal Goodman, but no artist held a bigger place in his heart than Dolly Parton. A devoted fan since childhood, Billy admired her music, humor, and authenticity. Those who knew him well understood that no conversation about country music was complete without mentioning Dolly.
Billy never met a stranger and was known for his quick wit, infectious laughter, and gift for storytelling. He especially loved family gatherings where he could reminisce about the old days, share stories, and keep everyone laughing. He had a unique way of showing affection through humor and was famous for giving people nicknames. Once Billy gave you a nickname, it usually stayed with you for life.
An avid animal lover, Billy shared a special bond with his beloved cats. He cherished his faithful companions Ziggy and Pugsley, who brought him comfort and companionship every day. He also held a special place in his heart for his cherished cats from years past, Mr. Belvedere and Simon Kitty, whose memories remained dear to him. His love for animals reflected the kindness and gentleness that defined his character.
Billy is survived by his sister, Martha Boling, along with numerous extended family members, dear friends, and countless people whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
Billy's passing leaves an emptiness that cannot be filled, but his memory will live on through the laughter he inspired, the music he loved, the faith he shared, and the countless stories that family and friends will continue to tell for years to come. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
A memorial service celebrating Billy's life will be announced at a later date. Family and friends will be invited to gather to share memories, laughter, music, and fellowship in honor of a life that touched so many.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to North Mecklenburg Animal Rescue or Dolly Parton's Imagination Library,(The Dollywood Foundation, C/O Finance Department, 111 E. Main Street, 2nd Floor, Sevierville, TN. 37862) two causes that reflect Billy's deep love for animals and his lifelong admiration for Dolly Parton.
