Carol Ann Dorst Vuchnich, 78, of Concord, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at her home on May 17, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
In accordance with Carol's wishes, the family will gather privately to celebrate her life.
Born on January 18, 1948, in Marshfield, Wisconsin, Carol was the daughter of the late Carol Maurer Dorst and the late Lawrence R. "Larry" Dorst. Carol was also preceded in death by her brother, Ronald Dorst.
She carried with her throughout life a creative spirit, a thoughtful heart, and a deep appreciation for beauty, relationships, and the world around her.
A gifted artist in many forms, Carol devoted much of her life to creativity and self-expression. She found joy in jewelry making, painting, weaving, and other artistic pursuits that reflected both her imagination and her gentle spirit. Her passion for the arts extended far beyond her own work, as she became deeply involved with the Cabarrus Art Guild, serving as President from 2023 to 2025. During her leadership, she poured herself wholeheartedly into the organization, helping it grow in membership, energy, and community impact. Those who worked alongside her admired not only her talent, but also her dedication, encouragement, and vision.
Carol also had a deep love for flowers, gardening, and creating welcoming spaces. As a Master Gardener, she lovingly transformed the family's home and yard into a place of warmth and beauty, thoughtfully designing landscapes that reflected her artistic eye and appreciation for nature. She also had a remarkable talent for interior design and took great joy in creating a home filled with comfort, elegance, and personality.
Travel was another great passion in Carol's life. Alongside her beloved husband, Wally, she spent many years exploring new places, making new friends and memories. Whether traveling abroad, tending to her gardens, creating art, or simply enjoying time with those she loved, Carol approached life with enthusiasm, joy, gratitude, and quiet strength.
Above all, Carol treasured her family. She shared decades of love and partnership with her devoted husband, Wally, whose life was forever enriched by her love. Together they built a beautiful life centered around love, family, creativity, and shared experiences.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband, Walter Shields Vuchnich of Concord; her children, Nicholas Vuchnich of Los Angeles, California, Robin Vuchnich of Clarksville, Tennessee, and Alex Vuchnich of Charlotte, North Carolina; her grandchildren, Dashiell Mattox-Vuchnich and Cora Mattox-Vuchnich, both of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and Viviana Vuchnich and Olivia Vuchnich, both of Charlotte, North Carolina; her sister-in-law, Clarice Dorst of Plano, Texas; her brother-in-law, Mark McCoyne of Toledo, Ohio; her nephews, Jeff Dorst of Austin, Texas, and Doug Dorst of Dallas, Texas; along with many extended family members and dear friends.
Memorials may be made to the Cabarrus Art Guild or to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, organizations that reflected Carol's love for art, compassion, and community.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, especially Nurse Katie and Aid Beverly, Dr. Geetha Vallabhaneni and the Infusion Team at Levine Cancer Institute, Dr. David Frate, Dr. John Powderly and his team at Carolina Biooncology Institute, 2 caregivers, Hoppy Mantooth and Debbie Mix and the many friends who made Carol's journey a little easier by their love and support.
