September 23, 1940 — May 19, 2025

Charlotte

Carolyn Lee Wells Carnes, 84, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2025, in Charlotte, North Carolina, surrounded by her loving family. Born on September 23, 1940, in Charlotte, NC, Carolyn was the daughter of the late Betty Lula Lee Wells and James Aubrey Wells. She experienced the loss of her mother at a young age, gaining a loving stepmother when her father married Betty Lou Wells. Carolyn was the oldest of six children. She was preceded in death by her husband of 29 years, Jerry Thomas Carnes; her siblings, James Walter "Walt" Wells and Kitty Wells; and her stepmother, Betty Lou Wells.

A proud native of Charlotte, Carolyn graduated from Mount Holly High School in 1958, where she excelled as a cheerleader and was actively involved in debate and student life. She attended King's Business College and earned her degree in 1959. Carolyn possessed a quiet confidence and a sharp administrative mind, qualities she carried into her professional life.

Carolyn married Jerry on July 21, 1962, at Oakhurst Baptist Church in Charlotte. They began their married life there, where Carolyn worked for many years at Blythe Industries. She was an engaged and loving parent, always present at school events, dance recitals, and Girl Scout meetings, even taking on the role of the cherished "cookie mom." Her house was always open to friends. She was known for her baking and was often asked to share her secret recipes.

In the early 1980s, the family relocated to Texas, living in Waco and San Antonio. She loved Texas bluebonnets and traveling around their new state. In 1985, they settled in Sarasota, Florida. There, Carolyn continued her legacy of service and connection, working in the office at Orange Acres Mobile Home Park. She enjoyed engaging with the residents and forged deep bonds that lasted for decades.

Carolyn was an active member and later a staff member of First Sarasota - The Downtown Baptist Church, where her faith, professionalism, and warmth made a lasting impact. She officially retired at the age of 73, touching countless lives with her graciousness.

Beginning in 2018, Carolyn lived with her daughters and grandchildren in Blairstown, NJ, and the Charlotte area. Being surrounded by family brought her immeasurable joy during her final years.

Carolyn will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to her family, Southern hospitality, enduring faith, and infectious laughter. She loved spending time with her close friends, reading, watching Jeopardy, cheering for the Florida Gators, and combing the Florida beaches for shark teeth. Above all, she cherished moments with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughters, Kristin Hatton (Tom) of Mooresville and Kelly Tarlton (Chad) of Concord; grandchildren Ryan Hatton (Jessica), Jessica Hatton (fiancé Chaz Blackwell), Anna Tarlton, and Ashley Tarlton; and great-grandchildren Lauren and William Hatton. She is also survived by her siblings, Marla Wells Dorsett (Roe), Laura Wells Saeger, Wayne Allen Wells (Elizabeth); and sister-in-law Becky Wells, and many nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.
