Dwayne Vern Newell, 84, of Concord, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on May 24, 2026, surrounded by the love, care, and devotion of his family.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Born on May 5, 1942, in Wadena, Minnesota, Dwayne was the son of the late Fern Gail Rowan Newell and the late Harold George Newell. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Roy Newell, Donald Newell, and Rhonda Hill.

Dwayne lived a life defined by intelligence, dedication, kindness, and deep love for his family. Thoughtful and analytical by nature, he had a remarkable mind for numbers, geography, history, investing, and business. He was an avid reader who loved learning and approached life with quiet wisdom and curiosity.

At the age of eighteen, Dwayne proudly entered the United States Air Force, serving his country honorably as an E-4 Senior Airman mechanic. Following his military service, he attended Mankato State University, where he earned his degree in business and continued additional postgraduate studies in management training in Saranac Lake, New York. During his college years, he served as president of his business fraternity, an early reflection of the leadership qualities that would remain with him throughout his life.

Much of Dwayne's professional life was spent in the shoe industry, where he became highly respected for his knowledge, leadership, and work ethic. During his career, he traveled extensively throughout Taiwan, South Korea, and Thailand, working closely with manufacturers and major footwear companies to oversee production and development. Later, he spent 29 years with Shoe Show, where he built lasting friendships and retired at the age of 72.

Dwayne also believed strongly in serving others. Throughout the years, he volunteered annually with The Salvation Army and faithfully served with the Knights of Columbus at St. James Catholic Church. Whether through his church, his community, or his personal relationships, he quietly gave of himself to help those around him.

Above all else, Dwayne treasured his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved being present in the lives of his children and grandchildren. His happiest moments were the times when his entire family was gathered together. Whether attending school activities, traveling with family, helping with projects around the home, or simply enjoying time around the table, Dwayne found his greatest joy in being surrounded by those he loved most.

Dwayne was exceptionally skilled with his hands and enjoyed woodworking, home improvement projects, and building things for his family, including furniture, screens for the family home, and a beloved swing set for his children. He approached every task with patience, care, and craftsmanship.

He also shared a special bond with Bailey, the family's beloved German Shepherd-Labrador mix. Bailey brought him countless hours of companionship and comfort, and Dwayne loved her dearly. She was a cherished member of the family and a faithful friend by his side.

Over the last several years, Dwayne faced Alzheimer's disease and cardiac amyloidosis with tremendous strength and dignity. His family lovingly cared for him at home throughout his illness, surrounding him with constant compassion, support, and unwavering devotion.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Jane Saling Newell of Concord; his daughter, Megan Tignor and husband, Dr. David Tignor, of Concord; his son, Nathan Derek Newell of Charlotte; and his cherished grandchildren, Meredith Tignor, Emily Tignor, and Colin Tignor. He is also survived by many extended family members, dear friends, and former colleagues whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude and love for all the doctors, nurses, and healthcare teams that helped care for him throughout his prolonged illness. They would especially like to thank the CNA angels who cared for him in his home and provided the entire family with such compassion, love, and care during the time they needed it most. They would also like to recognize Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County for the expertise, love, and guidance provided during his final days.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County or to the Alzheimer's Association .
