CONCORD – Ernest Michael “Mike” Moss, 72, passed away at Kannapolis Family Care Home on July 15, 2026, following a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, at Roberta Church. Rev. Chad Irons will officiate. The family will receive friends beginning at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary.
In accordance with Mike’s wishes, his body was donated to Duke University School of Medicine. A burial will not follow the service.
Mike was born in Charleston, SC, on January 31, 1954. He was the son of Robert William and Betty Hayes Moss. At a young age, Mike’s family moved from Charleston to Kings Mountain, where he was raised and graduated from Kings Mountain High School in 1972. In July 1978, Mike married Connie Laws. Their marriage took them to Charleston before moving to Orlando, where they lived for twelve years, and then to Concord in 1992.
Mike worked for UNC Charlotte for 30 years. He enjoyed fishing and camping with his family and took great pride in his impressive hat collection. He was a natural tinkerer who could fix just about anything and genuinely enjoyed figuring out how to make things work. Above all else, Mike was a proud grandfather.
Mike never met a stranger. He had a gift for making people feel welcome, and he truly enjoyed getting to know others. Whether he was sharing a story, lending a helping hand, or simply striking up a conversation, he left people smiling.
Mike was very active in his church. At Cornerstone Presbyterian, he enjoyed working the annual church barbecue and serving as an usher on Sundays. At Roberta Church, he was active in the men’s group, enjoyed helping George cook, and volunteered with church maintenance, always willing to lend his time and talents.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the many people who loved and cared for Mike throughout his journey with Alzheimer’s disease. A special thank you to neighbors Jerry and Donna, longtime friends George and Fran, the loving church family at Roberta Church, the compassionate staff of Kannapolis Family Care Home, and the dedicated team at VIA Hospice. Your friendship, kindness, and unwavering support brought comfort to Mike and his family and will never be forgotten.
Mr. Moss is survived by his wife of 48 years, Connie Laws Moss; daughter, Kathryn Elizabeth Moss McCarthy (Ryan) of Lexington; son, David Michael Moss (Stephanie) of Acworth, GA; sister, Kim Haynes (Dusty); brothers, Scott Moss (Annette) and Jeff Moss; sister-in-law, Luanne Moss; grandchildren Matthew McCarthy, Michael McCarthy, Ciara McCarthy, McKayla McCarthy, Caleb McCarthy, Luke Moss, and Noah Moss; and great-grandchildren Elaina McCarthy, Wyatt McCarthy, and Waylon McCarthy.
