Concord

Mr. Ernest Porter, Jr., of Concord, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by the love of his family, on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. He was 92 years old.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Born on March 29, 1934, in Charlotte, Ernest was the son of the late Ernest Porter and Eva Bortz Porter. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Orchard Lowe Porter; his first wife; and his cherished daughter, Mary Porter Lamb.

For 26 years, Ernest proudly owned and operated Porter's Drug Company, where he became much more than a neighborhood pharmacist. He was a trusted friend, a caring listener, and a familiar face to generations of families throughout the Concord community. His commitment to serving others and his genuine kindness left a lasting impression on everyone who walked through his doors.

Outside of work, Ernest embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity. He found great joy riding his motorcycle, spending countless hours in his workshop welding and building projects with his own hands, and preparing smoked meats during the holidays for family and friends. Those gatherings around his table became treasured traditions, creating memories that will be cherished for years to come.

An adventurous spirit at heart, Ernest loved traveling with his motor home. Together with his family, he explored all 50 states and ventured into Canada, always eager to discover new places, meet new people, and enjoy the beauty of God's creation. Whether he was on the open road, working in his shop, or surrounded by loved ones, Ernest found happiness in life's simple pleasures.

More than any accomplishment, Ernest will be remembered as a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. His quiet strength, generous heart, steady presence, and unwavering love for his family created a legacy that will continue through the generations who were blessed to know him. His life was one of hard work, integrity, adventure, and unconditional love.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Barbara Porter Johnston and husband, Tony, of Concord, and Carol Porter Boone of Raleigh; seven beloved grandchildren; ten treasured great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family members and dear friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness and friendship.

Though his family grieves his passing, they find comfort knowing that Ernest's journey is complete, his work here is done, and that he is reunited with those who have gone before him. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him, and his example of generosity, perseverance, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him.
