Wayne was born January 2, 1943 in Cabarrus County and was the son of Henry Obie Thompson and Ola Mae Moore Thompson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Julie Canter and his brother, Joe Thompson.
Wayne graduated from Concord High School in 1961. He worked several years with Cabarrus County Schools and was a faithful member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, where he sang in the choir. Wayne thoroughly enjoyed taking care of his yard and gardening. He loved watching sports and old westerns on tv. He also enjoyed singing all the great hymns he grew up with. The greatest joy of Wayne's life was getting to spend time with his grandchildren and great grandbabies. It warmed his heart when everybody got to be together for those special occasions. He was a loving and caring, Godly man, who will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 62 years, Kay Bennick Thompson; daughters, Ellen Griffin and husband Richard of Kannapolis and Kellie Schladensky and husband Rob of Concord; grandchildren, Joshua Canter and wife Molly, Justin Canter and wife Lee Anne, Emily Mullis and husband, Davey, Joseph Therrell and wife Holly, Seth Spears and wife Erica, Caleb Spears, and Kaci Spears; great grandchildren, Penny and Melody Canter, Ella, Everette and Ezra Canter, Michael Mullis, Ivy Spears and baby Spears on the way.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081 or to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 731 Union Street S. Concord, NC 28025.
