James "Cecil" Massey Jr., age 71, of Huntersville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on December 13, 2025, in Cabarrus County. Cecil's life was one marked by curiosity, creativity, and a deep love for music that stayed with him from childhood through his final days.
Born on June 8, 1954, in Charlotte, North Carolina, Cecil was the son of the late Nada Wallace Massey and James Cecil Massey Sr. Cecil was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 49 years, Elizabeth Craig Massey and his brother, David Massey.
He spent his early years in Charlotte, where his lifelong passion for music first began to take shape. Cecil attended West Mecklenburg High School and later continued his education at UNC Charlotte, nurturing a love for learning that extended well beyond formal schooling.
For more than 30 years, Cecil worked as a plastics thermoformer at Piedmont Plastics, where he was known for his dedication and reliability. His career came to an end following an eye injury, but his creativity and curiosity never slowed. While his work provided stability, music was always his true calling.
A self-taught guitarist, Cecil played in several bands throughout his life, most notably Crosstie and Back Porch Blues. Music was more than a hobby-it was how Cecil connected with others and expressed himself most fully. He found his greatest joy in playing alongside friends, sharing songs, stories, and laughter. When not making music, Cecil enjoyed reading and challenging himself with puzzles, always eager to keep his mind engaged.
He is survived by his daughter, Tamara Massey, and her fiancé, Greg Gunsallus, of Charlotte, his beloved granddog Shadow and grandcat Meg. He also leaves behind many friends and family, notably David Braendel and Ken & Toni Knight who helped care for him in his final days.
Cecil will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his thoughtful nature, and the music that flowed so naturally from his hands and heart. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In accordance with Cecil's wishes, no formal funeral services will be held. The family wishes to thank Amanda, Raven and the whole team at Carolina Caring Hospice and Palliative Care for their help in caring for him after his transition to hospice care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church, or a charity of one's choice.
