James Edward "Jim" Morris

James Edward "Jim" Morris, age 91, entered into eternal rest on August 4, 2026.

Born on August 28, 1934, in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, Jim lived a life centered on his Catholic faith, devoted to his family, and guided by a deep desire to serve others.

In September 1952, Jim enlisted in the United States Air Force. After graduating from Squadron 3726 at Lackland Air Force Base that November, he served in the United States Air Force Security Service (USAFSS) as a Radio Intercept Operator. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant, completed an overseas tour during the Korean War era, and was honorably discharged in 1956. His service was recognized with the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal, honors that reflected the discipline and commitment he carried throughout his life.

On February 19, 1955, Jim married his high school sweetheart, Dora Maria Mendoza, at Gesu Catholic Church in Miami, Florida. Together they shared more than seventy-one years of marriage, creating a home where faith was lived every day and everyone who entered felt welcome. Their marriage was later honored with an Apostolic Blessing from His Holiness Pope John Paul II, a treasured reminder of the spiritual foundation they shared.

Together Jim and Dora built a loving family, raising three children: Jay, Phyllis, and Paul. He and Dora welcomed 29 foster children into their home over the years, offering love, encouragement, and stability to children who needed it most. He was especially close to his five cherished grandchildren -Jenny, Leslie, Melody, Sarah, and Jimmy who brought him tremendous joy, as well as his great-grandchild, Connor.

After returning home, Jim built a successful 45-year career as an Architectural Coating Consultant. Combining an understanding of color theory, architectural design, and protective coating systems, he became a trusted resource for architects, contractors, and clients. He enjoyed solving problems, sharing his knowledge, and taking pride in work done well.

Jim believed that the blessings we receive are meant to be shared. Their home was a place where people found acceptance, a warm meal, and someone willing to listen. Whether helping family, neighbors, parishioners, or complete strangers, Jim gave freely of his time because he believed that generosity was one of the greatest expressions of gratitude.

His faith shaped every part of his life. Jim was a Sir Knight of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and was recognized with Honorary Life Membership in grateful recognition of his many years of faithful service. One of the greatest honors of his life was serving in the Honor Guard for His Holiness Pope John Paul II.

Jim's commitment to the Church extended far beyond the Knights of Columbus. He first served as an Alter Boy and later as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, parish council member, among other roles in numerous parish ministries. Together, Jim and Dora spent many years preparing engaged couples for marriage through Pre-Cana, sharing the wisdom of a marriage that endured for more than seven decades. He also dedicated himself to Respect Life Ministry, believing deeply in the dignity of every human person from conception to natural death.

To his family, Jim was a steady presence. He loved to read, never stopped learning, and enjoyed thoughtful conversations about faith, history, and the world around him. He used all that knowledge in his nightly viewings of Jeopardy! He taught more by example than by words, showing that a meaningful life is built one act of kindness at a time.

Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dora Maria Morris; his son, James Edward Morris; and two children whom he and Dora lovingly carried in their hearts after they were called home before birth. He is survived by his daughter, Phyllis Jeanne Rahilly (Richard Hamilton), and his son, Paul Joseph Morris (Amy Catherine). He also leaves behind his grandchildren- Jennifer Laura, Leslie Anne, Melody Jayne, Sarah Elizabeth, and James William-and one treasured great-grandson, Connor Rahilly, who will hold his memories and life lessons dear.

A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at St. James the Greater Roman Catholic Church in Concord, North Carolina, on August 10, 2026, at 10:00am with visitation beginning at 9:00am. Interment with military honors will follow at Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, North Carolina, where Jim will be laid to rest beside Dora, the love of his life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Catholic Charities, St. James the Greater Roman Catholic Church, or St. Jude.

Jim measured success not by what he accumulated, but by what he could give away. His life touched far more people than he ever realized, and his example will continue to live on in the family he cherished, the children he helped, and the countless lives made better because he chose to serve. Those who knew him will remember a man who made the world gentler, one person at a time.
