John Ray Boger, Jr.

John Ray Boger, Jr. son of the late John Ray Boger and Jessie Bost Boger died on Wednesday, July 29.

He was born April 2, 1929 and is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Anne Landauer Sprock Boger, his three children John Ray Boger III, Anne Boger Smith and husband Jerry Andrews Smith, Jr., and Miriam Boger Saunders and husband Perry Allen Saunders, and three grandchildren, Martha Smith Westphal and husband Logan Scout Westphal, Miriam Anne Smith, and Jerry "JT" Andrews Smith III. His wife Miriam Morris Boger predeceased him.

He was educated in the Concord City Schools and graduated from Duke University and Duke University Law School. Upon graduating from Duke, he spent three and one-half years in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant in the Judge Advocate General's Corps in Fort Jackson, SC, Fort Benning, GA, Korea and Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. After his military service, he began the practice of law in Concord. He was a partner in the firm of Williams, Boger, and Davis until 2020 when he became Of Counsel to the firm of Hartsell Williams. He was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 1960, the North Carolina Senate in 1966 and 1968. He served as Cabarrus County Attorney from 1970 until 1984. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Concord Telephone Company (Later CT Communications). He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Cabarrus Bank which was a subsidiary of Carolina Bankcorp, on which board he also served. He was a member of the Democratic Party for his entire life. He also served on the Cabarrus County Board of Elections where he was the chairman. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School, served as Church Lay Leader, and chaired the following committees: Board of Trustees, Staff-Parish Committee, Endowment Committee, and the Administrative Board.

John and his wife, Anne, enjoyed traveling and playing Bridge together. He achieved the level of Silver Life Master through the American Contract Bridge League. He loved his family. He took many memorable trips with them. He also enjoyed spending time and traveling with friends. He had regular breakfast groups in Concord and later at Well Spring in Greensboro. He was an avid golfer well into his 80s. John loved watching and attending sports, especially Duke Blue Devils basketball. The family appreciates the support and care John received at Well Spring. We especially thank the staff of Willow Way for the care over the last few months.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, August 8 at 11am at Well Spring Retirement Community in the Florence Phillips Hall with a reception to follow in the Special Occasions Room. On Sunday, August 9 at 2pm, a second Celebration of Life service will be held at Central United Methodist Church in Concord, NC with a reception following the service.
