John Hammett

September 2, 1941 — September 1, 2021

John Allen Hammett, Sr. of Concord, passed away on Wednesday, September 1, 2021
surrounded by his family. He would have turned 80 years old the next day.

John was born on September 2, 1941 to the late H.L. “Buddy” and Esther Hammett. He is also
preceded in death by his brothers, James “Jimmy” and Lamar “Bubba” Hammett and son Eric
Watson.

John graduated in 1959 from Concord High School. He was a High School All American and
selected to play in the Shrine Bowl. He earned a scholarship to UNC at Chapel Hill and proudly
wore #81 jersey. As a senior at UNC, he played in the Gator Bowl as a tight end. He graduated
in 1964.

John took over his father’s insurance agency in 1968. Hammett Insurance then merged with
other owners to create United Cabarrus Insurance. He continued in the insurance industry for
the remainder of his life. He was elected to be the County Commissioner in Cabarrus County
and was very honored to be the youngest during that time.

John loved UNC football, playing golf, traveling with Becky and his church. He took 2
memorable trips with his 3 boys, John Jr., Joe and Jeff to a Carolina Tar Heels College kick-off
game in Atlanta, Ga and the Miracle in Minnesota professional NFL game. He will be
remembered for his warm smile and kindness to everyone. John never met a stranger.

He is survived by his wife, Becky to whom he has been married to for 9,943 days; brother,
George Hammett; children, John Jr. (Ginny) Hammett, Joe (Wendy) Hammett, Jeff (Jenny)
Hammett, Erin (Mark) Brafford, Kristen (Bill) Kerwood, Todd (Mandy) Watson; 20 grandchildren
and 4 great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Duke Hospice for their care and support over the past few
months.

A funeral service will be held Monday, September 6, 2021 at 2 pm at Impact Church
International - 44 Cabarrus Ave W, Concord, NC 28025, officiated by Pastor Donna Wise. The
family will receive friends from 12 to 2 pm at the church.
