Lalla Green Nimocks Overby

Lalla Green Nimocks Overby, 101, formerly of Gainesville, Georgia, and Waynesville, North Carolina, died August 6, 2026, in Concord, North Carolina. Born on March 13, 1925, in Clinton, South Carolina, she was the daughter of Lalla Lee (nee Lucius) and David Ray Nimocks.

Because her father was a career Army officer, Lalla grew up with her brother Dave in several different states, as well as overseas in the Philippines. Following her graduation in 1945 from Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, she became a Red Cross field worker in Gainesville, Georgia. It was there that Lalla met and married her husband of 43 years, Howard Thomas Overby, Sr., a local attorney. Once their three children were in elementary school, Lalla returned to school for first a Masters in English from the University of Georgia and then a Masters in Library Science from Emory University. For a number of years, she enjoyed teaching English and literature and serving as a research librarian at Gainesville's Brenau University.

Following her husband's death in 1990, Lalla taught English for six months in Bratislava, Slovakia, and then served for two years with the Peace Corps at Mianyang Teachers' College in Sichuan, China. She retired and moved to Waynesville, North Carolina, where she loved being an active part of her church and community.

In 2017, Lalla moved to Taylor Glen Life Plan Community in Concord, North Carolina. While she missed the North Carolina mountains, she embraced life at Taylor Glen and appreciated the friendship and support of staff and members.

Surviving are Howard's and Lalla's three children: a son, Howard Thomas Overby, Jr. (Mary Catherine Payne), Vienna, Virginia; and two daughters, Currie Overby Renwick (David Alistair Renwick), Washington, D.C., and Sally Overby Langford (Thomas Anderson Langford, III), Concord, North Carolina.

She is also survived by the following grandchildren: Lalla Lee Renwick Marquez (Diego); Ann Green Langford Duncan (Nathan); Charles Maclean Renwick (Lauren); Sarah Overby Langford Stephens (Brad); Mairi Overby Renwick; Howard Thomas Overby, III; Elizabeth Fuller Overby Brusie (Tyler); and Lucius Payne Overby, and by nine great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Lalla's brother David Ray Nimocks, Jr., of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and his son David Ray Nimocks, III, also predeceased her. Surviving are her brother Dave's three daughters, Mary Flagg Haugh (James), Elisabeth Holt Gooch (Emmett), and Lalla Lucius Harley (Donald), and his daughter-in-law, Lynne Callahan Nimocks. Also surviving is her husband Howard's niece, Ruth Marie Tibbetts Morgan.

Lalla's children want to thank the family, friends, caregivers, and pastors who supported Lalla during the past several years. A graveside service will be held at the old cemetery of the Hog Mountain Baptist Church, Dacula, Georgia on a date not yet determined.
