Margaret Mary Yani (née Whelan), a devoted wife, mother, sister, and friend, passed away on July 27, 2025, at the age of 69, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. She faced her illness with remarkable strength and optimism, and in the end, left this world on her own terms-just as she lived every day: with grace, dignity, and deep love for those around her.
Born on June 3, 1956, in Belleville, New Jersey, she was the eldest child of James (Jim) and Mary (Mae) Whelan (née Dempsey). Raised by proud Irish parents, she grew up in a household rooted in tradition, strong values, and close family ties-an environment that shaped her grounded, empathetic nature.
On Christmas Eve 1984, she met the love of her life, Thomas (Rob) Yani, bonding over a shared passion for baseball. Five months later, they were married, beginning a 40-year partnership filled with laughter, loyalty, and genuine affection. Together, they raised two daughters, Sarah Yani and Meghan Yani, who were the heart of her world. She was the kind of mother who offered unwavering love, patient support, and never ended a phone call without giving you something to do. Her family was always her greatest joy and proudest accomplishment. They remain forever proud to be hers.
Margaret built a respected career in Human Resources at Walt Disney World, where she was admired for her work ethic, calm leadership, and unfailing generosity. She supported those around her with thoughtfulness and consistency, offering advice, encouragement, and often a tray of something freshly baked.
Outside of work, she found peace in her garden and loved traveling with her family. She had a deep appreciation for discovery-whether nurturing a flower bed or wandering a city she'd never seen before. Though she had many destinations left on her list, her spirit lives on in Rob, Sarah, and Meghan, who will continue to see the world through her eyes.
She is survived by her husband, Rob; her daughters, Sarah and Meghan; her granddogs, Jude and Simba; and her four siblings-Julia, James (Jim), Susan, and Patrick-along with their families, with whom she remained deeply connected throughout her life. She treasured her role as a sister and aunt and was a thoughtful, centering presence to all who knew her. She was also preceded in death by the family's beloved dog, Penny Lane, whose memory continued to bring her comfort and joy.
Margaret will be remembered for her quiet determination, generous spirit, and the care she offered in ways both big and small. She showed up when it mattered and stayed present in the moments others might miss. For her, staying connected always came with a reminder, a check-in, or something to keep in mind. Because she never stopped looking out for you-not even in goodbye.
A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held at a later date.
