Ray Buford Barbee, 93, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 where he was joyfully reunited with the love of his life, his beloved wife, Dorothy Cochran Barbee.
Ray was born on November 8, 1932, to Sam Barbee and Faye Burris Barbee. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, and his brother, Don Barbee.
He is survived by his three daughters: Donna Barbee Taylor and husband, Roger, of China Grove; Kim Barbee Shue and husband, Mitchell, of Emerald Isle; and Pamela Rae Barbee of Concord.
Ray was a proud and devoted grandfather to Mark Robbins and wife, Candace; Rev. Andrew Shue and wife, Kasey; Ryne Robbins and wife, Kristen; Austin Shue and wife, Kelsey; and Matt Taylor. He was also blessed with twelve great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Hazel and Kenneth Furr, and cherished the special relationships he shared with Doug and Katrina Brennan and Barry and Dawn Roberson.
A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Ray faithfully served his country before returning home to begin a career with Cannon Mills. He later devoted his time to his family, his church, and his community. Ray was a faithful member of Roberta Church, where he especially enjoyed serving alongside Dorothy at the church's hot dog sales and spending time with his church family. Together, Ray and Dorothy were honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of their years of faithful service.
Ray enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, including watching NASCAR races and enjoying a good cigarette while spending time with family and friends. He loved his community and the people in it, and although he enjoyed traveling with Dorothy and making memories with his grandchildren, there was always something special about coming home. Ray had a deep appreciation for the place and people he loved, and home was always where his heart was.
Ray will be remembered for his steadfast faith, quiet strength, his servant's heart, and his unwavering love for his family. His legacy of kindness, humility, and devotion to the Lord will continue to live on in the many lives he touched.
In accordance with Ray's wishes, a private graveside service will be held at a later date.
