Robert Moore

June 23, 1926 — January 14, 2024

Born to James and Ada Moore in Siler City, NC. There were a total of 13 children born to his parents – five did not survive infancy. He was 7th of 8 children. All siblings have preceded him in death.

Following death of his parents in 1933, Bob and four of his siblings were raised in the Junior Order National Orphan’s Home. They were sent to Tiffin, OH in February, 1934 and transferred to Lexington, NC in 1940. Being raised in orphanages taught the Homekids (as the orphans called themselves) life values: love for family, love of God, and love of country. While in the Lexington home, he met the love of his life – Margaret “Mandy” Lumsden. They were married October 4, 1947 until her death in 1987.

Bob served in the US Army from 1946-47. He spent time in Germany and liked to claim that Germany surrendered when they learned he was coming across the ocean. When other service members were complaining about the barracks, a fellow soldier said: “Moore, why aren’t you sad?” He explained that being in a dorm like environment was how he grew up so this resembled home to him.

Bob and Mandy had 2 children: Deborah “Debbie” Moore Hyatt (Roger) and Robert L “Bobby” Moore, Jr (Cathy). Bob and Mandy provided the template for life values both learned in the Homes. Their children were loved and cared for in a home where all were welcome – especially the Homekids.

Bob doted on his grandchildren: Abi Hyatt Abercrombie of Mooresville, Samuel Hyatt of Huntersville, Justin Moore (Rebecca) of Morehead City, and Jacob Moore of Winston-Salem. Especially dear to him were his 2 great granddaughters, Mandy Abercrombie of Mooresville and Marigold Moore of Morehead City.

Additional family include nieces in Asheboro, Lexington, and Matthews NC as well as nephews Art Moore in Peoria, AZ and Dwight Moore in Long Beach, CA and niece Darlene Moore Pawling in Eagle, ID.

After their marriage, Bob and Mandy settled in Charlotte, NC. Love for family remained in the forefront – relatives, church family, Homekid family, and friends accepted as family. They became members of First Christian Church and later were charter members at SouthPark Christian Church.

Bob’s infectious smile was contagious. He never met a stranger. From all he met, his hugs were said to be the best.
Bob’s career was with the US Postal Service. He was employed for 32 years and became active in the Postal Union. Following retirement in 1982, he continued working for the Postal Union as a part time secretary.

He served his fellow man by becoming a life-long blood donor. A picture appeared in the Charlotte Observer when he donated his 33rd pint of blood on his 33rd birthday. After 60+ years and 266 units, his church honored with the Big Drip award.

In addition, Bob officiated sports – football, basketball, baseball, and girls softball (this was said to be his favorite). He gained respect from players and coaches alike as he treated all participants fairly. The Charlotte Observer published an article with pictures in 2010 when he retired after 50 years serving as head referee for football games.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at Saint Andrew’s Assisted Living Center in Concord for their personal loving care provided for Bob during his stay.
