Leonard Wayne Newsome, 79, of Concord, passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County.
A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, October 12, 2026, in the Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Reverend Robert “Bob” Greene. Burial will follow at West Concord Cemetery, with military honors recognizing Wayne's service in the United States Marine Corps.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 11, 2026, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Wilkinson Funeral Home.
Wayne was born on February 10, 1947, in Concord, North Carolina, to the late Sarah Shoaf Newsome and Leonard Grant Newsome. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Michael Gene Newsome, and his brother, Darrell Grant Newsome; beloved dog, Weenie.
Wayne is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Elaine Christenbury Newsome; his son, Kevin Wayne Newsome and wife, Crystal, of Concord; his grandchildren, Megan Burleyson and husband, T.J. and Garrett Wayne Newsome; his great-grandchildren, Jentry Burleyson and Savanna Burleyson; his sister, Gail Porter and husband, Ron, of Concord; his brothers, Charles Newsome of Concord and Rodney Newsome of Albemarle; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Wayne carried the values of hard work, determination, and dedication throughout his life. Following his military service, he began a career with Carolina Tractor, later Carolina CAT, where he worked for approximately 20 years. He began as a diesel mechanic before moving into sales and service then warranty-related responsibilities. His knowledge of heavy equipment and his strong work ethic served him well throughout his career.
Wayne later established Cedar Ridge Hauling, his own heavy-equipment hauling business. He took great pride in his work and enjoyed the independence of running his own company. Whether behind the wheel of his truck, operating a tractor or bulldozer, or moving dirt, Wayne was happiest when he had a project underway. He was never one to sit still and was always ready to get an early start on the day.
Known affectionately by some as “the Mayor,” Wayne was never shy about sharing his opinion or offering a little supervision, whether it had been requested or not. He liked things done a certain way and had a personality that those who knew him well will never forget. Beneath his strong, hardworking exterior, however, was a generous heart. Wayne was always willing to help someone in need, whether by lending a hand, sharing what he had, or finding some other way to make a difference.
Wayne also enjoyed working in his garden, which he planted faithfully each year. He loved being outdoors and took satisfaction in watching the results of his hard work.
One of Wayne's most cherished companions was his beloved dog, Weenie, who preceded him in death just a few weeks earlier. Weenie was rarely far from his side and accompanied him on countless rides and adventures. Wherever Wayne went, Weenie was usually right there with him.
Above all, Wayne loved his family, especially his wife, Elaine. Their 56 years of marriage were a testament to the life they built together. His family will remember his unmistakable personality, his early-morning phone calls, his willingness to help others, and the many stories and memories that will continue to bring smiles for years to come.
Wayne will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane Kannapolis, NC 28081.
